Types of Pallet Racking Systems
Understanding your racking type is the first step. Selective racking (the most common) allows access to every pallet and is relatively straightforward to move. Drive-in and drive-through systems are more complex with shared rails. Push-back racking requires careful disassembly of the cart and rail system. Cantilever racking for long items needs special attention to arm removal sequence.
Pre-Move Assessment
Inspect every bay for damage before disassembly. Document any bent uprights, damaged beams, or compromised connections. Photograph each section with measurements. Create a reassembly map showing exact bay locations, beam levels, and load capacities at the new facility. This map is critical for reinstallation to meet safety codes.
Safe Disassembly Protocol
Always empty racking completely before disassembly. Remove beams from top to bottom. Never stand on racking components. Use proper fall protection when working at height. Label every component with its bay number and level position. Bundle hardware (bolts, clips, safety pins) in labeled bags attached to their corresponding uprights.

Uprights are the most vulnerable component during transport. Lay them flat, never standing, and use padding between stacked uprights. Beams can be bundled but should not exceed safe weight limits. Use flatbed trucks for long uprights — never bend or flex them to fit. Damaged uprights compromise the entire rack system's load capacity.
Reinstallation & Inspection
Install racking on level, clean floors. Use shims on uneven surfaces — never force uprights into position. Torque all bolts to manufacturer specifications. After installation, conduct a full load capacity inspection. Verify that all safety clips, column protectors, and backstops are installed. Many municipalities require a professional engineering inspection of newly installed racking.
