Create a Complete IT Asset Inventory
Before your move, document every piece of IT equipment: servers, switches, routers, firewalls, UPS systems, workstations, monitors, printers, phone systems, and cabling. Record serial numbers, configurations, and physical locations. This inventory is critical for both insurance purposes and ensuring nothing is lost or misconfigured during the move.
Back Up Everything
Create full backups of all servers, workstations, and cloud-synced data before any equipment is disconnected. Store backups both locally (on portable drives) and in the cloud. Verify that backups are complete and restorable. This is your safety net — if anything goes wrong during the move, you can recover without data loss.
Plan the Network Infrastructure at the New Location
Visit the new location and plan your network layout before move day. Ensure adequate power outlets, data ports, and cable runs are in place. Coordinate with your ISP for internet service activation at the new address — this often requires 2-4 weeks lead time. Test connectivity before the move if possible.

Your servers and network equipment should be disconnected and reconnected by certified technicians — not general movers. At Corporate Relocators, our IT team handles full disconnect, labeling, transport, and reconnect. Every cable is labeled, every connection is documented, and every system is tested before we sign off. Read our detailed server room moving guide for more.
Test Everything Before Day One
After the move, systematically test every system: internet connectivity, VPN access, phone lines, printers, email, and business-critical applications. Have IT staff on-site for the first full business day to troubleshoot any issues. Create a simple checklist that employees can use to verify their individual workstation is functioning correctly.
Plan for Phone System Migration
If you're using a traditional PBX phone system, coordinate with your provider for porting numbers to the new address. VoIP systems are typically easier to relocate but still require network configuration. Ensure your phone system is tested and operational before the first business day at the new location.
